For the fight with “Chocolatito” 26-year-old Martinez will have to change weight and rise to the second flyweight division.
Estrada (42-3, 28 KOs) was forced to withdraw from the show as he never fully recovered from the coronavirus he suffered last year.

Julio Cesar Martinez will fight instead of Estrada against “Chocolatito” Gonzalez
In the Chocolatito fight, Martinez will replace WBA and WBC super flyweight champion Juan Estrada, who is unable to enter the ring due to the effects of the coronavirus. Note that Julio Cesar agreed to move up in the weight category.
Gonzalez and Estrada were supposed to have a third fight between themselves. The first fight of the trilogy took place in November 2012, when Chocolatito won by unanimous decision. In March last year, Estrada defeated Roman by split decision.
Martinez last fought on November 19 last year against McWilliams Arroyo. The fight ended without announcing the result due to a strong cut in the applicant.

Roman Gonzalez
In 2016, Chocolatito took away the WBC belt of 52.2 kg from the Mexican Carlos Cuadras, becoming the first conqueror of four weight divisions in the history of Nicaragua. Thus, Gonzalez confirmed the status of the leader of the “pound”.
But already in 2017, the puncher flew out of the top 10. The reason for this is two defeats from the Thai puncher Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. And if the first turned out “with a smell”, then you can’t find fault with the second – a knockout in the 4th round.
The Nicaraguan did not easily survive two debut defeats in his career. Moreover, in November 2016, he lost his coach – the legendary Arnulfo Obando died of a stroke.
After two interim fights in 2020, the nicaraguan entered the fight for the WBA world title and easily beat the previously unbeaten Brit Khalid Yafai, also winning the comeback of the year nomination.
In 2021, he went to team up with the Mexican division leader Juan Francisco Estrada – the fight ended in a controversial defeat for Chocolatito. This was the second fight between the fighters, the score in the series became a draw.
It was supposed that in March 2022 the fighters would fight number 3, but the champion picked up covid. Martinez volunteered to replace him.

Julio Cesar Martinez
One of those champions who started their professional careers with a loss. True, in the fifth fight in the profiring he took revenge.
In 2019, in the WBC eliminator, he became the mandatory contender for the organization’s flyweight title – he knocked out Briton Andrew Selby.
In August, he almost became the world champion: he went to Britain, delayed Charlie Edwards in the 3rd three-minute period, but did not take the title, because in the heat of the fight he hit a lying opponent. I was lucky that instead of being disqualified, I got the result “no decision”.
Martinez vs Gonzalez Prediction
Roman Gonzalez vs Julio Cesar Martinez – Last March, Chocolatito proved to all detractors that he is still a top-level fighter. He again acted aggressively, went forward, threw out multi-hit combinations. And most importantly, he demonstrated the highest work rate.
Despite the high odds for the Mexican, all factors are against him:
– did not fight with opponents of such a high level
– rises in weight
– accepts pain on (moderately short) notice
– not famous for such a high workrate
– very sinless in defense (he was on the floor in the last fight against MacWilliams Arroyo)
– will not have an advantage in firepower (which has helped more than once in the past).
Given all of the above, we recommend betting on Gonzalez (early).
